Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a natural, holistic therapy that uses ultra-fine needles inserted at specific points on the body to promote healing. This ancient practice improves circulation, supports tissue repair, reduces inflammation, and relieves pain.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

By stimulating the central nervous system, acupuncture encourages the release of endorphins and serotonin—natural chemicals that relieve pain and elevate mood. Because acupuncture treats the body and mind as interconnected, it’s often used for both physical symptoms and emotional conditions such as anxiety, poor sleep, digestive issues, migraines, menstrual irregularities, and more.

What Can Acupuncture Treat?

According to the NIH, acupuncture is proven effective for chronic pain (e.g., low back pain, neck pain, arthritis), headaches, nausea, and menstrual cramps. At He Gu Acupuncture & Herbology, we also support patients with stress, fertility, rehabilitation, and overall wellness.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Yes. When performed by a licensed practitioner using sterile techniques, acupuncture is very safe. At He Gu Acupuncture & Herbology, all treatments use sterile, single-use needles and are performed by licensed professionals following strict hygiene protocols.

How Are Acupuncturists Trained?

In New York and most states, acupuncturists must hold a Master’s or Doctorate from an accredited institution and a state license.
Dr. Guo is uniquely qualified, with extensive training and clinical experience in both China and the U.S., having practiced in hospitals and clinics in both countries. Her integrative approach combines traditional Chinese medicine with modern clinical insights to deliver highly personalized care.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Most patients feel little or no pain. The needles are extremely thin—about the width of a human hair. Some points may create a dull, tingling, or warm sensation, especially in areas with tension. Discomfort, if any, is brief and can be adjusted during treatment.

What Are Treatments Like?

Your first visit includes a comprehensive intake where you’ll share your health history and treatment goals. You’ll then receive a personalized acupuncture session and rest for about 25 minutes. Follow-up visits begin with a short check-in to assess your progress and adjust your treatment as needed.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Treatment frequency depends on the condition, its severity, and how long it’s been present. Chronic or severe symptoms may require more frequent sessions initially. At He Gu Acupuncture & Herbology, we tailor your plan based on your health history, lifestyle, and treatment response.

Herbal Medicine

How Can Herbs Be Incorporated?
Herbal medicine is a key part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. If beneficial, your practitioner will recommend a custom herbal formula to complement your acupuncture treatment.

How Are Herbs Taken?

At He Gu Acupuncture & Herbology, we provide individualized herbal powders (granules) tailored to your specific condition and needs. These are mixed with warm water and taken orally—typically 3–5 spoonfuls, twice a day.

Payment

How Much Does Treatment Cost?
Costs vary depending on your personalized treatment plan. We offer a free consultation to discuss your health goals and outline treatment recommendations and pricing.

Can I Use FSA or HSA?

Yes, we accept payment through Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA), as we are registered as a medical provider.
